• Asses what spices you will need in your rack
• Determine the spices that will be needed the most often. Having your regularly used spices near the front and top of the rack will make it easier to get what you need.
• Decide what type of spice rack frame, or spice rack stand you want. Should it match the stainless steel appliances or be wood to match the kitchen cabinets?
• Determine where the spice racks location. This is important since the amount of spices the rack will hold will depend on the size of the rack and where it can be stored.
• Agree upon the spice rack container and lid. Many spice racks have glass containers, others are plastic made to look like glass. I recommend plastic as they are a lot harder to break than
  glass. When deciding on a lid make sure that the lid is easy to open. Some racks come with screw off
  
  

  lids, others have corks or rubber stoppers. Are your hands usually wet when cooking? Take this into consideration when deciding on the appropriate spice rack lids.

Once you are armed with all this information, go to store and try to find the best kitchen spice rack you can that fits the above criteria. It may take some time and you may have to compromise on some things but in the end you should be happy with your decision.

There are no standards for a designer spice rack. It can be anything you want it to be. Most importantly it should reflect your style as a cook and fit in the design of your kitchen.
