So what are designer kitchen spice racks? A designer kitchen spice rack is a spice rack that you design yourself. There are many kitchen spice racks in the stores that include the spices. If you want a designer spice rack you need to do the following:

  • Asses what spices you will need in your rack
  • Determine the spices that will be needed the most often. Having your regularly used spices near the front and top of the rack will make it easier to get what you need.
  • Decide what type of spice rack frame, or spice rack stand you want. Should it match the stainless steel appliances or be wood to match the kitchen cabinets?
  • Determine where the spice racks location. This is important since the amount of spices the rack will hold will depend on the size of the rack and where it can be stored.
  • Agree upon the spice rack container and lid. Many spice racks have glass containers, others are plastic made to look like glass. I recommend plastic as they are a lot harder to break than
    glass. When deciding on a lid make sure that the lid is easy to open. Some racks come with screw off

    lids, others have corks or rubber stoppers. Are your hands usually wet when cooking? Take this into consideration when deciding on the appropriate spice rack lids.

Once you are armed with all this information, go to store and try to find the best kitchen spice rack you can that fits the above criteria. It may take some time and you may have to compromise on some things but in the end you should be happy with your decision.

There are no standards for a designer spice rack. It can be anything you want it to be. Most importantly it should reflect your style as a cook and fit in the design of your kitchen.


Spices or No Spices


One dilemma when buying kitchen spice racks is to decided whether or not to buy the spice rack with our without spices. Buying kitchen spice racks with spices is the most convenient, but you need to ask yourself are you ever going to use the spices that are included. Some spice racks come with some very unique spices that may never be used, or you may not even know what dish to cook with them.


Obviously buying kitchen spice racks without spices is less convenient then buying the rack with spices, but this gives you the opportunity to customize the spice rack to fit your style and flavor of cooking. This also sometimes tends to be the cheaper route. You can find spices at most any supermarket. The usually come in the small plastic spice rack bottles with the screw top lids which are very inexpensive. To transfer the spices to your spice rack jar be sure to buy a small funnel. This will help you transfer the spices from the plastic bottle to your spice rack jars without losing any. Some stores sell spices in plastic bags. In this case, cut a corner of the plastic bag off and pour into the funnel.
If you are going to purchase your own spices, make sure that the jars in the spice rack are not relabeled. You will want to buy on that has blank spice rack labels that you can write on or print on to match the spices that you will add to the rack. Another thing to not is the type of lid on the jars. Is it cork, or twist off, etc. Make sure to get a rack with a lid that you are comfortable removing. The last thing you want to do is to be knee deep in cooking and can’t screw off the lid to get your spices out.

Kitchen spice racks can really save you time in the kitchen without having to fumble through a cabinet filled with many little spice bottles. Make sure that before you buy it is everything you need. And don’t forget that you need a durable spice rack.
